Under-Five Child Mortality Studied
Millenium Goal No. 4:
Reduce, by Two-Thirds, the Under-Five Child Mortality Rate
Most causes of child mortality – including diarrhea, malaria and neonatal infection – are preventable and tied to improved healthcare, clean water and adequate sanitation services. In 2005, 10.1 million children died before their fifth birthday. Despite this grim reality, a mother’s education level can be a powerful force for childhood survival. It has been proven that children are twice as likely to survive if their mother has at least a secondary level education, hence our support of Curculo de Amigas’ sponsorship program.
Locally, MOMS Orange County works to increase the mother’s chance of delivering a healthy baby and after birth, focuses on promoting the infant’s healthy development. See www.Momsorangecounty.org. Also, be sure to check out The Child Health Site where sponsors pay for children’s healthcare.
