Safe Church Policy Approved Unanimously

Jan 28th, 2012 by pastormary | 0

Developed by the Personnel Committee and unanimously approved by the Coucil, NCC now has an updated and expanded Safe Church Policy  to guide us in protecting our children, youth, and vulnerable adults.  First approved by a 2/3 vote of the Church Council in December 2011 and a 2/3 vote of the Trustees in January 2012, the policy has now been unanimously approved by Council!  You may view and download a copy of this policy by clicking on the Safe Church link below, or contact the office at 494-8061.   If you have questions about the new policy, members of Personnel will be available to answer your questions at this year’s annual meeting on January 29 following worship.

Chapman University Founders Day Event

Ordinary Stories–Extraordinary Truths
Founders Day at Chapman University
March 23-24

Dr. Amy-Jill Levine, a devout practicing Jew who is a Jesus scholar by vocation, will provide lectures and workshops all day on Friday,  helping us hear Jesus as a Jewish storyteller. She is engaging and interesting. Rev. Felix Carrion, leader of the StillSpeaking campaign of the United Church of Christ, will preach and lead worship on Saturday morning.  Joan Rich will be honored as the United Church of Christ Church Leader of the Year.  Click here for more information.  Register online by clicking here.

Chapman University in Orange, CA is holding it 29th annual Founders Day.  Under the theme of Ordinary Stories, Extraordinary Truths participants are invited to:

  • Attend three Friday lectures by Dr. Amy-Jill Levine of Vanderbilt Divinity School.  A self-described “Yankee Jewish feminist who teaches in a predominantly Christian divinity school in the buckle of the Bible Belt,” Professor Levine combines historical-critical rigor, literary-critical sensitivity, and a frequent dash of humor with a commitment to eliminating anti-Jewish, sexist, and homophobic theologies.
  • Gather for Shabbat with Temple Beth Sholom in Santa Ana on Friday evening. Dr. Levine’s theme: how Christians and Jews read scripture differently.
  • Worship on Saturday morning with preacher The Rev. Felix Carrion, coordinator of the Still Speaking Ministry of the UCC in Cleveland.
  • Meet DOC and UCC students from across the country and celebrate the ministry that helps them grow.
  • Enjoy an hour concert by Chapman University’s Concert Choir on Saturday afternoon
  • Engage in a Saturday afternoon conversation between Dr. Levine and three of Chapman’s finest faculty: Dr. Marvin Meyer, Dr. Marilyn Harran, and Dr. Julye Bidmead.
  • Fellowship at reunion events—on Friday for all alumni, Disciples on Campus parents and prospective parents, and members of Fellowship of the Twelve and on Saturday for all Disciples on Campus alumni and families (graduates from 1987 to the present).

Chapman’s Founders Day is a great way to see the exciting campus for the first time or to reconnect with alumni and friends from other churches.  We hope that Founders Day will strengthen your congregation’s knowledge of scripture and your sense of connection to Chapman University and YOUR amazing students here.

Registration closes on March 21. Your church has detailed information, as well as registration forms. Detailed information and online registration is available at www.chapman.edu/churchrelations/founders.asp. Questions? Please call the Office of Church Relations at 714.997.6760.

Food Drive for Laguna Resource Center

Jan 26th, 2012 by pastormary | 0

Help the Laguna Resource Center to assist our low income neighbors here in Laguna Beach.

Money is short,
supplies are low,
need is still high.

Let’s do again what we’ve done
so well in the past
and stock the shelves with non-perishable food items
in preparation for the winter months.

Personal care items like soap,
shampoo, razors, shave cream,
diapers, white athletic socks
are also needed.

Donated items may be placed in the marked box in the narthex.
May we bless others as we have been blessed.
