Somali Refugees Need Help NOW

Jan 26th, 2012 by pastormary | 0
The Horn of Africa is facing a severe crisis due to the convergent effects of the worst drought in decades, a sharp rise in food prices, and the persistent effect of armed conflict in Somalia, which has combined to trigger one of the sharpest refugee outflows in a decade to Kenya and Ethiopia. Over ten million people are at high risk. Urgent lifesaving actions are needed to prevent the deaths of an estimated 480,000 severely malnourished children in drought affected Kenya, Somalia, Ethiopia and Djibouti. Each week thousands of families are crossing the border from Somalia to neighboring countries where UNICEF and other humanitarian agencies are providing therapeutic food in refugee camps and rapidly setting up additional emergency feeding centers. At some of the camps, half of the children arriving each day are malnourished. The need in the Horn of Africa is tremendous. But it is not hopeless. Humanitarian organizations are rising to this challenge in extraordinary ways. They have the expertise and the tools–what is needed now is additional funding. Please consider a donation to one of the following organizations offering hope to people in an extremely desperate situation:UCC (www.ucc.org/disaster/africa-drought/east-africa-drought-famine.html),

United Nations Children’s Fund (www.supportunicef.org),

United Nations Refugee Agency (www.unhcr.org/emergency/somalia/),

MercyCorps (www.mercycorps.org/donate/fighthunger),

Doctors Without Borders (www.doctorswithoutborders.org/donate),

Thank you for your compassion and support.

All Church Annual Meeting January 29

Jan 16th, 2012 by pastormary | 0

Please join us for our Annual Meeting on Sunday, January 29, following worship service.  If you have not received your letter with yearly budget and Nominating Report, you may pick them up in the narthex, or contact Elizabeth in the church office to have them emailed or posted to you.  You can see our Nominating Report of proposed 2012 officers by clicking “Officers” below.  You can also download the budget for review by clicking the NCC Budget button below.  You will note that 2011 income was significantly lower than anticipated, so staff salaries are frozen for 2012 and many ministries and budget line items have been reduced for a 2012 balanced budget.  Don’t forget to pledge your support for 2012 by clicking on the pledge card above, filling it out and turning it in at church!
