Fat Sunday Crepe Extravaganza
Sunday, February 15, 2015 - 11:15am
Join Mary LaRusso and friends after 10 a.m. worship this Sunday, February 15, for a celebration of “Fat Sunday,” with homemade crepes and fair trade coffee. Fat Sunday is a silly name given to the last Sunday in the Christian year before the season of Lent begins, related to Mardis Gras (“Fat Tuesday”), celebrated on – well, the Tuesday before Lent begins. For centuries a ritual fast has been a part of Christians’ Lenten discipline, and carnival celebrations gradually grew in popularity for the season before Lent. Why crepes? Historically foods that were restricted included milk eggs butter and flour. What would our ancestors make to use up those ingredients? Pancakes or, in Neighborhood Church’s case, crepes. Even though Congregationalists seldom fast during the season of Lent, Neighborhood Church has long enjoyed this festive celebration as its own Mardis Gras before Mardis Gras. Last year, Neighborhood Church children and adults cooked up over 100 crepes, and we’re ready to do so again this Sunday. Grab your Mardi Gras beads and join us this Sunday, 11:15 a.m. (after the 10:00 am worship service) for a Crepe Extravaganza.
