Week 5: Living The Questions
Scripture: Matthew 7:7-8
Family, I have been struggling to find the appropriate words to share with you this week, in the wake of the tragic shooting in Las Vegas. The truth is, thoughts and prayers are not enough for our nation; Americans of all political stripes are appealing to our loving ears of compassion and all who care to engage, with one collective request. They are crying out for a national policy resolution that, for once and for all, will help to stem the dangerous tide of gun violence. As your pastor, one who is committed to finding hope and promise in the midst of deep pain and loss, I encourage you to remain resilient and resistant. We will stand true with our Progressive Christian values, pointing others to a time when our children and families can feel safer in their own country. With compassion for all, we will work to build alliances against gun violence, wherever possible, and stoke constructive dialogue on this critical issue in our time. Let it start with you, with me, with all of us!
This weekend, we continue our journey through the Progressive Christianity series, and our focus is more than timely given recent events! Questions abound, do they not? I am referring to questions about keys to a prosperous life, questions about God's plan for all of us, questions about ways to engage with someone I deeply disagree with on key issues - the list goes on and on! If there is anything beautiful we carry forward after World Communion Sunday, during which we affirmed the availability of God's table to all, it is that we are free to question. We are free to seek wisdom, in its many forms and colors, for our lives and for our spiritual journeys. Our Jesus encourages us through his very example to live the questions!
