Michele McCormick, Ph.D. is a practicing psychologist and local resident who writes the “Inside Out” column for the Laguna Indy and leads a local open mic for prose writers. In another lifetime, she was a key note speaker for the megachurches of Orange County, inspiring others through integrating psychological and biblical teachings. Currently, she is exploring the inter-faith tradition while intentionally pursing a contemplative spiritual path reflective of the Christian mystics, Thomas Merton, and the Vipassana traditions. Following the path of the Buddha through Bodhgaya, Sarnath and Varanasi India on a comparative religion excursion with Loyola Marymount and InsightLA she was moved by parallels in the early ministries and messages of Jesus and the Buddha. Her talk entitled, “Jesus and Buddha: Parallel Paths, Transcendent Truths” at Neighborhood Congregational Church, Sunday September 25 explores discoveries and meaningful application through a narrative tapestry of personal story, poetry, song, and scripture. Each August Michele travels off the grid in northern New Mexico into the wilderness of Carson National Forest to become a temporary, contemporary “hermit”. This opportunity to live in solitude and silence without distraction allows for restoration, long periods of meditation, contemplative writing and wandering the mountain trails.
