6-29-14: This is Only a Test

Scripture Reading: Genesis 22:1-14

No matter how hard we try, we cannot avoid the pain and trials of life. God’s test of Abraham—to sacrifice his own son—highlights the trials of conflicting loyalties, as we struggle to follow God while living with personal integrity and loyalty to those we love. At a time in history when child sacrifice was a fairly common practice to appease a displeased deity, scripture claims that Abraham’s willingness to sacrifice Isaac means he passed God’s test, but also that child sacrifice would not be required of God’s followers. Scripture indeed shows us that in the midst of our pain and fears of abandonment, God is there to rescue us and lead us safely home. That being said, the “test” was barbaric and one that I believe Abraham actually failed. See you Sunday.
